Several of Chow’s rivals sought to paint her as a soft-on-crime, tax-and-spend candidate whose time as mayor would be ruinous.
An Ipsos poll results made clear Torontonians’ top concerns: housing affordability, cost of living and crime and safety. Ours is a city that faces multiple and overlapping crises: of affordable housing and homelessness, of transit and gridlock, of climate and the environment, of decaying infrastructure, of fear in the subways and on the streets. In handing a victory to Chow, Toronto voters signaled their desire for something different, that the steady hand of Tory’s tenure on its own is not enough to address the challenges of today. She is the third woman to wear the chain of office in Toronto and the first person of colour – she emigrated with her family from Hong Kong in the 1970s - a powerful symbol in a city struggling to address persistent racial and gender inequities. Now she is the person elected to replace him, after Tory’s surprise resignation in February mere months into a third term.
She lost the mayor’s race that year to John Tory. On Monday, the long-time councillor and former NDP MP won the prize she first sought in 2014.
